Taking motors for a spin: EV powertrain testing

EV testing station

Automotive Testing Technology International commissioned an article examining the facilities provided by independent specialists for testing electric vehicles. As EVs become more important to the future plans of car manufacturers, the demands they make of testing facilities are growing both in complexity and in importance.

I visited the labs of powertrain testing specialist Intertek, and also interviewed experts from FEV in Germany.

Key quote
“Customers are pushing motors to 15,000rpm today and asking for 20,000rpm in two to three years’ time. We’re in the process of specifying a rig that will go to 30,000rpm, to keep ahead”
David Meek, chief engineer, Intertek
